Overview

Inspired by the 2024 SF Design Week and companies like Gantri and PROWL, I embarked on creating interactive 3D printed lamps—starting with my Fishbowl Lamp, Watering Can Lamp, Hydrant Lamp, and Satellite Lamp. These designs not only mark a new direction in my work but also the beginning of my journey into product development documentation through video content. Alongside crafting these lamps, I’ve developed skills in capturing the process through photos, music, and sound, resulting in compelling videos that have gained 2,000+ views on Instagram. This journey has pushed me to grow as a designer, exploring new possibilities with 3D printing and creative storytelling.

Fishbowl Lamp 🐟

Inspired by iconic designs like the IKEA Varmblixt, SIMIG Mushroom, and GANTRI Argizari, I set out to create an organically shaped lamp that truly feels like ‘me.’ After experimenting with sketches and forms, I fused the aesthetics of koi fish ponds with modern lighting, pushing myself to explore surface modeling in Fusion 360. After plenty of googling, undoing, and troubleshooting, I’m excited to present the FISHBOWL.

This project involved sketching, CAD surface modeling, rendering, tolerance checks, 3D printing, and low-fidelity prototyping. Next steps include coloring the fish, polishing the design, and possibly implementing Design for Manufacturing (DFM) practices. I’m also exploring ideas for making the fish modular or even having the lamp spin on its own—endless possibilities!

Watering Can Lamp🚰

This short project is an exploration of finishing 3d printed surfaces: I used sand paper, slurries, and spray paint to build a glossy finish. More iterations of sanding and paint can help achieve a mirror finish. This two part lamp connects with a simple press fit. Other options such as threads, glue, and snap were also considered, but for the use case of a lamp, press fit was sufficient. Looking forward to applying surface finish and connection experience!

Hydrant Lamp🚿

This project was a deeper exploration on creative lamp design. Living in Berkeley, I don’t get to see the red hydrants as much as I did in NYC. During this build, I used Fusion’s form editor to create a “splash”, making it feel like a snapshot in time.

There are lots of changes to be made before its ~perfect~, but for now, heres hydrant lamp.

Satalight Lamp🛰️

Meet Satalight, the most personal and imperfect lamp I’ve ever made. Born from the excitement of a job interview and shaped by the sting of rejection, this lamp is a reflection of my journey. From jagged edges to a finished design, it’s a reminder that creating for yourself can turn setbacks into something meaningful. As I complete my 23rd revolution around the sun, I’m proud of what I’ve made. Remember, every flaw tells a story. 🌟🛰️ #DesignJourney #Engineering
